A transdisciplinary consortium to help preserve marine megafauna
Share The Ocean is a research programme led by bañulsdesign and carried out with a consortium of three entities. This page sets out what each one contributes, who decides, and who funds the work.
The aim of this consortium is to preserve marine biodiversity by combining academic research with entrepreneurial innovation.

Three areas of expertise
Marine engineering
bañulsdesign — naval architecture and marine engineering firm: performance, vessel design, digitalisation and decarbonisation.
Statistical research
The PLATON team, an Inria project-team joint with École Polytechnique, hosted at the Centre de Mathématiques Appliquées (CMAP, UMR 7641, Palaiseau). Numerical methods and uncertainty quantification.
Biology and conservation
The PELAGIS observatory, UAR 3462, La Rochelle Université / CNRS. Monitoring of marine mammal, seabird and other large marine species populations, coordination of the French national stranding network, support to public policy, and production of observation data.
Who decides
Founding members — bañulsdesign and INTENS.
Consortium members — the three entities above: bañulsdesign, the PELAGIS observatory and the PLATON team.
Steering committee — Renaud Bañuls, Emma Lelong and Auriane Virgili for Share The Ocean; Vincent Ridoux (La Rochelle Université), Olivier Le Maitre (CNRS, Centre de Mathématiques Appliquées) and Hélène Peltier as external members.
Funding and support
The programme combines public and private funding.
INTENS, a French simplified joint-stock company and founding member, supports the programme through corporate philanthropy.
This project received a grant of €180,000 from the French State under the Fonds Vert scheme.

Green Marine Europe — Share The Ocean is a supporter of this voluntary environmental certification programme for the European maritime industry. Supporters — scientific bodies, environmental groups and public agencies — help shape the programme’s criteria.
International Whaling Commission — the programme has the institutional support of the IWC.
