Share the Ocean is an interdisciplinary research programme with many objectives: to protect marine biodiversity<\/strong>, perpetuate and develop the maritime economy<\/strong>, increase ocean knowledge<\/strong> and raise public awareness<\/strong> of major maritime issues, using ocean racing as a demonstrator. We aim to reduce the number of collisions<\/strong> between marine megafauna and ships by using statistical modelling to cross species distribution data with ship routes. We consider the characteristics of both species (e.g. size, swimming speed and immersion time) and ships (e.g. speed polars and size), and use this information to produce meteorological routings and estimate the probability of encountering animals. In high-fidelity zones, where animal data is recorded, we can propose exclusion zones<\/strong> to avoid areas of concentration and assess their effectiveness. We collaborate with international universities to refine these zones according to the temporality of events. Share the Ocean’s ultimate goal is to extend its expertise to the entire maritime transport sector in order to reduce collisions with marine megafauna on a global scale.<\/p>\n This programme is addressed to all users of the sea<\/strong>. In order to preserve marine biodiversity while ensuring the safety<\/strong> of ships and passengers, we need to rethink our maritime practices<\/strong> by routing ships in a more responsible and ecological way<\/strong>.
